In my opinion...

TO: opinion@dailygazette.com

... the look, new to me, of the Gazette deserves attention
and accolades. Over the years I've been an inveterate reader
of the New York Times which I pick up from the corner market
next to my house in downtown Albany. Next to the Times, the
Times Union and the Gazette are always on display. On occasion,
when a local story grabs my interest, I pick up the TU, but once I've
read the story, put it down again.

Unfortunately it's been a while since I've picked up the Gazette, but
I did yesterday - to look at the photo of the Corporate Challange. Then
I noticed how your paper has been redesigned. It is really handsome,
readable, contemporary and compelling. Unlike the TU, the news does not
get lost in the sea of advertisement.

Kudos and a tip of the 75Grand Texas A&M baseball cap to y'all.

Washday. Breathless and surprised,
we'd run all the way up from the hill,
hand in hand the way we used to do
in my mother's yard

Out and in between the curtained shirts and
pillowcases of another week, our faces cool
with the crush of wrung out dew against
our cheeks.

To: Subject: MUTUAL BENEFIT.

Dearest Partner,

It is my honour to request your assistance on this bussiness proposition
which if pursued to its conclusion will be of immense benefit to both of
us. This request may seem strange but I hope you will give it attention and
respond to me as soon as possible. I feel quite safe and satisfy dealing
with you in this Mutual Beneficial transaction. Though, this medium
(Internet) has been greatly abused, I choose to reach you through it
because it Still remains the fastest, surest and most secured medium of
communication.
l also guarantee you that this deal is hitch free from all
what you may think of and i encourage you to read it to the end so that you
Can understand it very well.

I am John Kumar from Ivory Coast, the son of late Mr.Kumar being that I lost
my father. My father was a serving director of the Cocoa exporting board
until his death.

He was assassinated by the rebels following the political uprising. My
mother and myself tried and eventually succeeded in securing some of these
assets, which include a mansion and some physical cash. We left Ivory Coast
with the total amount of Three million seven hundred and fifty thousand
United States Dollars [ $3,750.000.00 ] which we deposited; sealed in a
DIPLOMATIC VAULT as valued diplomatic documents belonging to our foreign
affiliates.

After depositing the money, we were left with no other option than to SEEK
SAFETY in a country here in South America which i will disclose to you
later. The problem now is that we are looking for a trustworthy partner in
a stable economy who can help us move the money out of the Security
company. In that case, I want to know if you can help us transfer the funds
into your account in your country or any safe place for it will be use for
investment purpose.

We shall offer you 20% of the total sum, five percent will be set aside for
any expenses if any that might be incurred by both parties during the
transaction, while the remaining 75% will be used for investment. Also you
will be entitled to 10% payment from annual turnover in whatever business
undertaking you advice us to go into. Though we have plans to do investment
in your country, like real estate and industrial production, but I am only
a young man and my mother is a woman so we shall need your advice.

However, this arrangement will only hold for a period of ten consecutive
years
. This is my reason for writing to you. So I expect your immediate
response
so that we can conclude this transaction in the very shortest
time
. As soon as i get your response, i will give more details on how to
proceed for the funds claim.

Please indicate your genuine willingness and your urgent response via this
my private email account;[johnkumar@sissify.com ]

Yours Sincerely,
 John Kumar.

My wife's not talking to me at the moment. It may have been something
I said or did; or something I shoulda, but didn'tÂ…. Obviously I'm still working
in the basement here in Albany. And I'm still writing and taking photos,
(especially when I visit my brother [now that we're reconciled] in Kenosha)
so - I've got stuff to share.

As you know, from my last submission, my brother Mike visited me here in
Albany and spent two days with me at work. He made a good impression
on everyone and I recently shared this story with some of my co-workers,
including my boss. They seemed to enjoy it.

If you don't use the story there's no need to return it, or the photo as I
have copies in my archive. If you decide to print the story I have high resolution
original files of the photographs which I can ship to you.

Thanks, again, for your consideration.

UNE CHRONIQUE ENNUYEUSES | (excerpt)

UNE CHRONIQUE ENNUYEUSES
Jan Galligan
Paris, 1995

Ya-t-il quelqu' un qui parle anglais?

Gar de Montparnasse Nov 5, 19:30

We have arrived at the station in Paris and are about to look for the Metro
in order to quickly get from the train station to the Place where we
remember seeing a very large movie palace. At the moment, we can't remember
which Place it is, but we know it was in the vicinity of Place d' Italaie,
since that is where we met Clare for dinner, and we walked right past it on
the way to, and from, dinner. We plan to see Kevin Costner's film,
WaterWorld. The film is V.O., version originale, which means it's not
dubbed into French, and we can ignore the subtitles. We get off the TGV and
walk into the station which is jammed with people returning to Paris or
leaving Paris, for the weekend. It has the same crowded feeling as Grand
Central Station on Thanksgiving. The crowd is dense and milling about. It's
difficult to push our way through to find directions to the Metro, or just
figure out where we are. Suddenly the crowd is pushing us backwards. In
front of us, the police have stretched a length of crime-scene tape and are
beginning to cordon off the central section of the train platform. Hundreds
of us are jammed behind the lines, trying to determine what is going on.

Across the station the police have pushed the crowd away from the central
area as well. Lillian and I shove our way to the front of the crowd. At the
far end of the station, behind the opposite crowd is our entrance for the
Metro. The police seem fairly casual. The crowd seems intent, but confused.
We cannot pick up on what is happening, but we notice the electronic
billboard overhead is saying things about baggage, interdict, and something
to the effect that everyone is subject to a search of their bags.
Occasionally, someone from the crowd tries to break into the clearing, but
the police rush over and push them back. It's exciting and tense. We're
torn between staying to watch what happens, risking having our bags
searched, not having our passports with us, and trying to make our way to
the movies. I notice one man on his knees near a kiosk at the center of the
cleared area. He gets up and moves rapidly away. The crowd tenses.
KABOOM!!! An explosion reverberates through the station. My heart stops.
Lillian's face is ash. People scream and cower away from the police line.
'Let's get the hell out of here', I say. I grab Lillian's arm and we push
our way to the back of the crowd and hurry towards the closest exit. On the
street, we try to make sense of what has happened.
